What is the AP Writing Skills Survey?
Students will complete a short, 17-item skills survey on a range of writing skills, and Quill will then provide you with a roster of personalized practice activities you can digitally assign to students who need further skill development.
Who developed the AP Writing Skills Survey?
In an effort to further support AP teachers in providing flexible learning opportunities for their students, the College Board® has worked with Quill.org to develop free new resources to help students practice targeted sentence construction skills in their writing. Quill.org is a non-profit organization that has developed entirely free online writing practice activities for students, focusing on foundational skills important for success in writing. Quill helps students practice sentence construction skills by using artificial intelligence to automatically grade sentence-level writing activities and provide students with personalized feedback.

How do teachers use the AP Writing Skills Survey?
- Sign Up: Teacher signs up for Quill (it’s free!) and assigns Quill’s AP Writing Skills Survey.
- Survey Writing Skills: Students take 30-minute skills survey .
- View and Assign Recommendations: Teacher accesses recommended practice activities to assign to students over the next 2-3 weeks—even having students practice just one skill is beneficial!
- Students Practice: Students should spend 10 minutes per activity over the next 2-3 weeks (note: there are 4-5 activities per pack).
As a teacher, you’ll have the option to track which of your students are using Quill and the number of activities they complete.
